Welcome To Healthy Lungs for Kids
Session V July 30-August 3
This camp is perfect for campers who wish to get health education and compete in a variety of different sports each day. The goal of the program is to increase each campers confidence in their ability to take steps to manage their asthma and stay physically active. The camp curriculum is based on the American Lung Association's award winning Open Airways for Schools Program. Our staff uses an interactive teaching approach -group discussion, stories, games and role play-to promote campers active involvement in the learning process. Topics covered include:
- Basic information about asthma & avoiding triggers
- Recognizing and managing symptoms
- Using medication devices
- Getting enough exercise and doing well in school.
The daily schedule will consist of 2 periods of interactive asthma education and 2 periods of participation in the Multi Sport Athletics Camp. Campers will have a lunch period and swim session. This camp is coed for children ages 8-11.
What to Bring
Every Camper should bring their medication devices. They should wear comfortable athletic shoes, shorts and a T- shirt. A Bathing suit and towel will be needed for swim.
Program Director: Melodi Pirzada & Kathy McKillop
Melodi Pirzada,MD, Director of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine,and Kathy McKillop, CPNP, Pediatric Pulmonary Nurse Practioner at Winthrop University Hospital are highly qualified and experienced in providing health education to children. Melodi graduated from Ankara University medical school in Turkey, then did her residency at Winthrop University Hospital and Pulmonary fellowship at College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. She is Board Certified in pediatrics and pediatric pulmonology and has over 20 years of experience working with children. Kathy received her certification as a Nurse Practioner from Columbia University, since then she has worked in both primary care and as a subspecialist in the care of children with Asthma and other chronic respiratory illnesses. She is a member of the Asthma Coalition & Association of Asthma Educators.
